117th Annual Conference Fellowships

The NTA is pleased to offer three fellowship/funding opportunities for the 117th Annual Conference, the NTA Equity and Inclusion Travel Fellowship, the NTA Pre-Conference Mentoring Dinner for Women/Non-Binary Persons, and the NTA Climate Tax Fellowship.  See below for the specifics for each fellowship.

NTA Equity and Inclusion Travel Fellowship

The Equity and Inclusion Travel Fellowship provides conference travel funding with the goal of increasing participation in and creating long-lasting relationships with the National Tax Association and its activities among underrepresented minority (URM) graduate students and early career Ph.D.s/J.D.s engaged in the theory and practice of public finance, including public taxation, spending, and borrowing. The Fellowships will cover hotel, conference registration, and a travel cost offset.

Eligibility
All Ph.D. or J.D. advanced graduate students (4th year or later for Ph.D. candidates, 2nd or 3rd year for law students) or early career graduates (fewer than 6 years since graduate degree) with interests in the theory and practice of public finance, who are members of an underrepresented minority group. Recipients must attend the Annual Conference in person in Detroit. The submission portal has closed.

Fellowship recipients will receive:

  • Two nights’ accommodations at the conference hotel
  • $599 to be used toward travel expenses
  • Registration fee waiver
  • A complimentary one-year membership to the NTA

NTA Pre-Conference Mentoring Dinner 

The National Tax Association (NTA) Pre-Conference Mentoring Dinner provides an opportunity for women and non-binary persons engaged in the theory and practice of public finance and taxation to interact and create professional relationships with each other and the NTA. The dinner will be the evening of Wednesday, November 13, prior to the NTA Annual Conference at a Detroit area restaurant. Participants will be organized into small groups based on common interests and each group will be matched with two mentors. Participants are encouraged to engage in conversations on a variety of issues, including generating research ideas, collaboration and co-authorship, publishing, promotion processes, networking, and work-life balance. Mentors and mentees are also encouraged to connect before, throughout, and after the conference, including the opportunity to have a practice job market interview conducted by a senior mentor. Recipients must attend the Annual Conference in person in Detroit. The submission portal has closed.

Eligibility

All women/non-binary advanced Ph.D./J.D. students (4th year or later for Ph.D. candidates, 2nd or 3rd year for law students) as well as early career scholars within five years of completing their graduate degree are eligible to apply. Applicants from under-represented minority backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply. Applicants must plan to attend the NTA conference in-person.

NTA Climate Tax Fellowship

The NTA Climate Tax Fellowship provides conference travel funding for graduate students and early career MAs/PhDs/JDs whose research and professional interests lie at the intersection of tax and climate policy. The fellowship provides an NTA membership and supports the travel and participation of up to 4 students or early career professionals at the 117th NTA Annual Conference in Detroit, Michigan, November 14-16, 2024.

Eligibility

Postgraduate degree candidates (including JDs, PhDs, and Masters’ students) currently enrolled at an institution of higher education OR early career scholars within five years of completing their graduate degree with a demonstrated interest in issues at the intersection of tax and climate or environmental policy are eligible for the fellowship. Recipients must attend the Annual Conference and the Climate Tax Plenary in person in Detroit. The submission portal has closed.

Fellowship recipients will receive:

  • A scholarship of $2,000 to cover transportation and lodging in Detroit for the conference
  • Complimentary registration for the 2024 Annual Conference
  • A complimentary one-year membership to the NTA
