111th Annual Conference Graduate Student Activities

November 15-17, 2018 | Sheraton New Orleans Hotel | New Orleans, Louisiana

Graduate Student Initiatives!

The National Tax Association warmly welcomes graduate students to attend our Annual Conference in New Orleans.

The conference offers many opportunities to meet and talk with NTA members, the leaders in tax and government spending policy. As you will find out, our members want to get to know you and learn about your research! And for those of you on the job market, attending the conference will increase your profile and help put you in touch with potential employers.

We have several activities planned specifically for graduate students. Read on!

Graduate Student Breakfast
All students are invited to a free (yes, yes, we know…) breakfast on Friday, November 16 from 7:15 to 8:15 am in the Armstrong/Orpheus ballroom on the 8th floor of the conference hotel. This is a great opportunity to meet students from other graduate programs and NTA members — some of whom may become your colleagues and coauthors. In addition, NTA members employed in government agencies and think tanks will discuss how they inform and develop public policy with their work and research. Trade off some sleep for food, and join us!

Sponsorships for the breakfast are available! Contact Matt Coffindaffer at mcoffindaffer@ntanet.org for information.

NTA: The Next Generation Session
One session at the conference will consist entirely of graduate student papers. The submission deadline for the session has now passed. The session is well attended by the NTA community of tax and public finance professionals as well as graduate students.

Update: Information on the NTA Next Generation Session is available here

Graduate Student Research Forum
The Annual Conference will also have a student poster session that will allow students to network with other professionals working on tax and government spending policy-including potential employers! Students will present their research one-on-one and in a small group setting.

Update: Information on the Graduate Student Research Forum is available here

Volunteer to be a discussant or session chair!

Saturday Afternoon Short Course
Graduate students are encouraged to attend the short course on recent research in business taxation presented by Eric Zwick, Associate Professor of Finance and Fama Faculty Fellow, University of Chicago Booth School of Business. The session will run from 1:00 to 2:30 pm, on Saturday, November 17 and will be held in the Borgne meeting room (3rd floor) of the conference hotel. The short course is sponsored by the University of Michigan Office of Tax Policy Research.

On the Job Market?
If so, please tell us when you register for the conference. You can also provide us with a link to your webpage. We will make it easier for potential employers to find you by putting your name, e-mail address, and homepage on the conference website and indicating on the conference program whether a speaker is a graduate student on the market this year. We also will have a room set aside for informal meetings. Maybe you can knock out a first round interview at the conference!

Stay tuned for program and registration information. Please direct any questions to the program chairs at nta.nola18@gmail.com.

See you in NOLA!
